Update on Scenic Eclipse

By James Shillinglaw, Jun 14, 2019, (post a comment) (0 comments)

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours said its new Scenic Eclipse, what the company calls the world's first Discovery Yacht, is moving closer to her official launch on Aug. 15, 2019 with the successful completion of extensive sea trials. That news follows a year of at least two delays due to construction issues and strikes at the Serbian yard where the vessel is being built.

"It was a real pleasure to take Scenic Eclipse out to sea for the first time," said Capt. James Griffiths, the ship's new skipper. "Sea trials are a critical milestone in the construction process as it is the first time all the ship systems are operated together and is a key opportunity to confirm the theoretical information from the tank tests and computer modeling. The results from these trials surpassed every expectation."

Capt. Griffiths said he had worked extensively with Azipods on other ships like Scenic Eclipse's, and these sea trials confirmed how incredibly versatile and powerful they are, particularly when coupled with the ship's oversized Bow Thrusters. "I was also delighted with how quiet the ship is," the captain said. "She was vibration-free and virtually silent during all our trials, exceeding our expectations in terms of stability, maneuverability, and performance. Scenic Eclipse really does manage to combine small ship maneuverability with big ship levels of comfort and quietness; it's quite remarkable to experience it."
With sea trials complete, Scenic Eclipse will now undergo the final touches to its interior and exterior and the final training of the onboard teams before the official launch and commencement of the schedule of sailings. This ship will have 114 all-verandah suites; 10 dining options, from Asian Fusion to French fine dining to a chef's table to a poolside buffet; a 5,920-square-foot spa with a well-equipped gym and separate yoga and Pilates studio.

The ship will have two six-guest helicopters and one six-guest submarine capable of depths of nearly 1,000 feet to allow for explorations far beyond any done on expedition ships to date; indoor and outdoor plunge pools; butler service for all guests and an almost 1:1 guest-to-staff ratio; innovative zero-speed stabilizer fins, 50 percent larger than standard to provide greater stability; the highest passenger ship ice-class rating (Polar Class 6); redundancies in propulsion, navigation, safety systems, and food refrigeration; state-of-the-art bridge systems; GPS dynamic positioning system allowing for stationary positioning without an anchor, reducing any environmental effect in sensitive regions.

This will be the Scenic's first oceangoing vessel for Scenic in its 33-year history. The company began by offering escorted tours before starting river cruises in 2008 with 15 Space-Ships offering five-star river cruises in Europe, Southeast Asia, Russia, and Egypt. Sister brand Emerald Waterways has eight Star-Ships offering European river sailings with an eighth (Emerald Harmony) launching in 2019 for Southeast Asia's Mekong River. Exclusive charters are offered on the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar, the Volga River in Russia, yacht cruises out of Croatia, and Egypt's Nile River.

Explora Journeys, the luxury lifestyle brand of the MSC Group, unveiled the inaugural itineraries for its second ship, Explora II, launching in summer 2024. Those itineraries are now open for booking. This new set of journeys will allow guests to explore off-the-beaten-path ports in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, India, the Indian Ocean and Africa. marking the first time the luxury lifestyle brand will sail in these regions.

With 25 journeys and 14 extended journeys between August 2024 and end of April 2025, the itineraries will include 82 unique ports in 26 countries. At each stop, guests will have opportunities to discover the local nature and culture through exclusive activities, while at the same time exploring “bucket list” destinations and delving into the locations through sustainable and tailored experiences. All journeys are designed for the traveler who wants to stay longer, leave later and travel deeper.

Explora Journeys provides guests with a slower pace of travel, unconventional arrival and departure times, and the opportunity to spend more time in each destination with overnight stays while in port to ensure they feel fully immersed in the local culture and environment.

“This is a new chapter for the brand, and we are extremely proud to unveil Explora II and these new itineraries,” said Michael Ungerer, CEO of Explora Journeys. “Our portfolio of destinations is constantly expanding, and we look forward to welcoming guests on board our ships to enjoy once-in-a-lifetime experiences in incredible countries where they will be able to reconnect with themselves, whist connecting with the people they meet, the surroundings and the local communities.”

Explora II will first traverse the Mediterranean reaching ports in Italy, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Israel and Croatia, where guests will immerse themselves in the ancient history of each country, enjoy their traditional and signature culinary flavors, and soak up the surrounding art, colors and architecture. Explora II’s guests will be able to visit some of the most beautiful cities and islands in the Mediterranean, including Rome, Sicily, Menorca (the gastronomy capital of 2022) before sailing to the Eastern Mediterranean and visiting the islands of Mykonos, Santorini, Kalamata and Corfu.

After exploring Israel, Explora II will pass through the Suez Canal and allow guests to enjoy Egypt, the pharaohs’ land, with its heritage, immense deserts and vibrant oases. The ship will then sail to the Arabian Peninsula towards Saudi Arabia, cruising the coastline of the Red Sea and visiting the world-heritage sights of Al Ula and Hegra. Explora II then sails to the Arabian Gulf to visit the Doha, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, known for their tall skyscrapers and beautiful mosques.

Explora II will then reach the coast of India where guests can explore everything from the evergreen forests of the Western Ghats, a primordial lost world of waterfalls and tea plantations, that climb from the beaches of Goa to the Keralan hinterland beyond Kochi. The ship will sail on to Mumbai.

The voyage will continue to the islands of the Indian Ocean, including Seychelles and Maldives, before stopping in Mozambique, Tanzania, Madagascar, Kenya, Mauritius and South Africa. Relaxing white sand beaches and crystal waters will give way to the Serengeti savannah where guests will be able to experience eco-tented safaris with elephants and leopards.

As with Explora I, Explora II’s guests will be accommodated in “Homes at Sea” designed to stimulate the senses and enhance the connection with the ocean. Featuring elegant Swiss precision, modern European craftsmanship and vibrant design, the suites are spacious, serene and luxurious homes-away-from-homes for travelers.

The food and beverage offering on board of Explora II will include 12 bars and lounges as well as six restaurants. Curated by Chef Franck Garanger, head of culinary at Explora Journeys, menus will feature local and fresh ingredients taking inspiration from the destinations visited. The dining outlets will offer varied and healthy options to allow every guest to embark on a gastronomic journey while on the ship.

Explora Journeys will continue to use the latest in environmental-supporting technologies. Like its sister ship, Explora II features the latest selective catalytic reduction technology, enables a 90 percent reduction in nitrogen emissions, is Rina Dolphin certified and has been built with ship-to-shore power capabilities to avoid CO2 emissions while at berth.

Aiming to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, Explora Journeys recently announced that Explora III and Explora IV will feature LNG engines, while Explora V and Explora VI will feature not only feature LNG engine but also hydrogen power. The ships will have new generation technologies on board and tackle methane slip issue effectively, including a containment system for liquid hydrogen that will enable them to use promising low-carbon fuel. The Hydrogen fuel will power a six-megawatt fuel cell to produce emissions-free power for the hotel operation and allow the vessels to have zero emissions operations while in port. These innovations will bring Explora Journeys’ investment in its fleet of six ships to €3.5 billion ($3.66 billion).

Bookings for Explora II sailings from August 2024 to end of April 2025 are now open.
